95 ChaptersJEE Main 2027 Syllabus: What's In It and How to Cover It
Last checked: 28 September 2026
The JEE Main syllabus is set by the National Testing Agency (NTA). As of 28 September 2026, NTA has not released a separate JEE Main 2027 syllabus. The one in force is the syllabus NTA revised for 2024 and kept for 2025 and 2026, published on the official JEE Main syllabus page. It has 14 units in Mathematics, 20 in Physics and 20 in Chemistry, all drawn from Class 11 and Class 12.
NTA's exam calendar lists JEE Main 2027 Session 1 for 22 to 24 and 28 to 30 January 2027, with 31 January as a buffer day. Session 2 dates were not out when we checked. JEE Advanced has a separate syllabus set by the organising IIT. The latest official version is in the JEE Advanced 2026 brochure from IIT Roorkee. The 2027 brochure has not been published yet.
| Subject | Chapters in this tracker | Official JEE Main units | JEE Main Paper 1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 32 (17 Class 11, 15 Class 12) | 14 | 20 MCQs + 5 numerical, 100 marks |
| Physics | 29 (15 Class 11, 14 Class 12) | 20 | 20 MCQs + 5 numerical, 100 marks |
| Chemistry | 34 (12 Physical, 13 Organic, 9 Inorganic) | 20 | 20 MCQs + 5 numerical, 100 marks |
| Total | 95 (50 Class 11, 45 Class 12) | 54 | 75 questions, 300 marks, 3 hours |
The tracker splits NTA's 54 units into 95 textbook-sized chapters, so the one official co-ordinate geometry unit becomes five chapters. It also keeps 11 chapters that are not in the current JEE Main syllabus. Nine are Chemistry chapters that JEE Advanced 2026 still lists: States of Matter, Solid State, Surface Chemistry, Hydrogen, s-Block Elements, Environmental Chemistry, Polymers, Chemistry in Everyday Life and Metallurgy. The other two, Linear Inequalities and Linear Programming, are board topics.
Exam pattern and marking
- JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E. or B.Tech): a 3-hour computer-based test. Each subject has Section A with 20 multiple-choice questions and Section B with 5 numerical-value questions. All 75 questions are compulsory.
- Marking: +4 for a correct answer, minus 1 for a wrong answer, 0 if you leave it blank. Negative marking applies to numerical answers too.
- Two sessions: January and April. Raw marks become NTA scores so shifts can be compared.
- JEE Advanced: two compulsory 3-hour papers on one day. In 2026 it was held on 17 May by IIT Roorkee. Question types can change between years, so read each brochure.
What changed recently
- 2024 syllabus cut: NTA removed Mathematical Induction and Mathematical Reasoning from Maths, and Communication Systems plus some experimental skills from Physics. Chemistry lost eight chapters: States of Matter, Surface Chemistry, Isolation of Metals, Hydrogen, s-Block Elements, Environmental Chemistry, Polymers and Chemistry in Everyday Life.
- 2025 pattern change: Section B lost its choice. From 2021 to 2024 you picked 5 of 10 numerical questions. Now there are exactly 5 per subject and all count.
- JEE Advanced kept its scope. Its 2026 syllabus still covers the removed Chemistry chapters, so Advanced aspirants cannot drop them.
- 2027: no syllabus or pattern change had been announced by 28 September 2026.
How to use the tracker's six milestones
Each of the six pills adds its weight to the chapter bar. A chapter counts as mastered only when all six are ticked. Use the Class Selector to stay on one class, and the High Yield Only filter when time is short.
- Lectures (25%): you have been taught, or have self-studied, the whole chapter once.
- Notes (15%): a short formula and concept sheet you can revise in 15 minutes.
- NCERT (15%): textbook read, with in-text and exercise questions done. This matters most in Chemistry.
- Practice (20%): a full set of chapter problems from your module or a standard book, with mistakes marked.
- PYQs (15%): past JEE Main questions for that chapter, solved against the clock.
- Revision (10%): a later pass where you redo the marked mistakes without looking at solutions.
A realistic plan to cover 95 chapters
- Class 11 (50 chapters): about one chapter a week. Basic Mathematics, Kinematics, Laws of Motion and the Mole Concept feed into most later chapters, so give them extra time. Use the summer after Class 11 to clear backlog and PYQs.
- Class 12, April to November (45 chapters): new chapters on weekdays and one Class 11 revision block every weekend.
- December to mid-January: finish a full revision and take 3-hour mocks, building up to two or three a week before Session 1.
- February to April: use your Session 1 result to pick weak chapters, get through board exams, then sit Session 2. Aiming for Advanced? Add past Advanced papers.
- Revision cycles: plan at least three passes. The Revision pill marks the first.
- PYQs: start with papers from 2024 onward, since they match the current syllabus. Older papers still help, but skip questions on removed topics if you are only writing JEE Main.
- Track real hours: time practice sets on the focus timer and log your day with a free online study timer. See how many hours to study for JEE for daily targets.
Where recent papers put the weight
NTA does not publish chapter-wise weightage. These notes come from published analysis of the January 2026 session, so read them as trends from past papers, not rules.
- Mathematics: the longest and toughest section. Many questions came from coordinate geometry, calculus (definite integrals, application of derivatives), matrices and determinants, and vectors and 3D geometry.
- Physics: electrostatics, capacitors, current electricity, optics and modern physics came up often, mostly as formula-based numericals.
- Chemistry: a steady tilt toward NCERT-based questions.
Common mistakes
- Working from an old chapter list that still includes removed topics.
- Ticking Lectures and moving on. Most of the marks are won at the Practice and PYQs stages.
- Guessing numerical answers. Since 2025 a wrong numerical answer costs a mark, just like a wrong MCQ.
- Taking mocks without reviewing them. Spend at least as long on the analysis as on the test.
