CBSE Syllabus 2026-27 for Class 10 and 12: What's In It and How to Cover It

Last checked: 28 September 2026

CBSE publishes its curriculum every year on cbseacademic.nic.in. The 2026-27 curriculum is out and applies to the Class 10 and Class 12 board exams in 2027. For each subject it lists the chapters, unit-wise marks, the split between the board paper and internal assessment or practicals, and the question paper design. Most chapters follow the NCERT textbooks.

Class 10 now has two board exams a year. CBSE notified the scheme in June 2025 and ran it for the first time in 2026, with a compulsory main exam from 17 February and an optional second exam from 15 to 21 May. Class 12 still has one main board exam. The 2027 date sheet had not been released as of 28 September 2026.

In total the tracker covers 7 Class 10 subjects (125 chapters and units) and 18 Class 12 subjects (185 chapters). Science and Maths chapter counts match the NCERT chapters named in the 2026-27 curriculum. English is split into 32 smaller items covering First Flight, Footprints Without Feet and grammar, so you can tick lessons and poems one at a time.

Exam pattern and marking

  • Board papers: 3 hours each for the main Class 10 and Class 12 theory papers listed above.
  • Internal assessment and practicals: done in school through the year and sent to CBSE. They are 20 or 30 marks you can secure before the board paper.
  • Question design: CBSE fixes the share of competency-based questions. In Class 12 Biology, half the marks test knowledge and understanding, 30% test application and 20% test analysis and evaluation, with about 33% internal choice.
  • Sample papers: CBSE says it will publish 2026-27 sample question papers on its academic website. They are the closest guide to the real paper.

What changed recently: two board exams for Class 10

  • First exam (February): compulsory for every Class 10 student. Treat it as the real exam.
  • Second exam (May): optional. You can use it to improve marks in up to three subjects from Science, Mathematics, Social Science and Languages. The better score counts.
  • Eligibility: students who miss three or more subjects in the February exam cannot take the May exam and move to the next year's main exam.
  • Class 12: the two-exam scheme does not apply. There is one main board exam, plus the usual supplementary exam.

How to use the tracker's milestones

Pick your class with Switch Class, then choose a preset or your own subjects with Choose / Edit Subjects. Each chapter has six pills. The High Weightage filter shows chapters we tag as high scoring.

  • Class 10: NCERT Read (20%), Lectures (15%), Notes (15%), Exercises (20%), CBSE PYQs (20%) and Sample Paper (10%).
  • Class 12: NCERT Read (20%), Notes (15%), NCERT Ex (20%), Board PYQs (20%), Sample Papers (15%) and Revision (10%).
  • Order that works: read NCERT, make notes, finish every NCERT exercise, then do past board questions and a sample paper. Board answers are marked against NCERT, so the textbook comes first.

A realistic plan for the 2026-27 session

  • April to September: first pass of every chapter. Tick NCERT Read and Notes within a week of each school lesson.
  • October to December: exercises and PYQs, pre-board exams, and all practicals, projects and internal assessment work.
  • January: sample papers under 3-hour timing and a full revision of every subject.
  • February onward: board exams. The 2027 dates are not out, but 2026 main exams started on 17 February.
  • Class 12 with JEE or NEET: the boards and entrance syllabi overlap heavily in Science, so one NCERT-first pass serves both.
  • Track real hours: time each sample paper on the focus timer and log your day with a free online study timer. See our guides on Class 12 and Class 10 study hours.
Put marks where CBSE puts them. Unit marks are official, not guesses. Calculus alone is 35 of 80 marks in Class 12 Maths, and two units make up 50 of 80 marks in Class 10 Science. Finish those first, then spread out.

Common mistakes

  • Studying from old guidebooks that include content the 2026-27 curriculum no longer lists.
  • Treating internal assessment as a formality. It is 20 to 30 marks you control.
  • Skipping the official sample paper and marking scheme.
  • Practising only direct questions when the papers now include case-based and competency questions.
  • In Class 10, relaxing for February because a May exam exists. The second exam covers only three subjects.
